The L Currency
Alternative currencies are exactly what the name suggests, an alternative means to account for, enable and supplement exchanges of goods and services.
Having regard to L:
  • L50 is paid into the account of each member when they sign-up to tgl and accept the Charter
  • thereafter L is earned in the Skills Exchange by members choosing to teach, give or learn
  • L is debt-free because it is not lent into existence and is not repayable to the L Bank
  • its value comes because it is created by the choices of members to collaborate and learn
  • when accepted in a community, it provides increased liquidity to boost local activities and trade
  • e.g. when traders accept 20% in L for goods, local prices reduce by 20% in conventional money
  • naturally, people earning L10 an hour in the Skills Quarter will choose to shop for L-Bargains
  • so, trade is attracted to local businesses and away from supermarkets and large businesses
  • as L increases in acceptability, traditional money stays in and supports the local economy
  • similarly, the cost of local public services can reduce in line with the % acceptable in L
  • local people can collaborate to deliver their own local services as projects for hands-on learning
  • any increase in supply and circulation of L is founded on the creative choices of the local people
  • thus, L supports 'bottom-up' self-empowerment and hands-on, collaborative life-long learning

    As it is tgl's vision to be 'At The Heart Of Your Community' we thought that the best way to embody that was to literally build a digital VILLAGE and community!

    The tgl VILLAGE is divided into 5 districts which are home to different aspects of tgl and are designed to help members easily navigate their way around. Inside each district is a series of smaller areas which specialise in particular services and functions.

    All content in the tgl VILLAGE is created by the members of the tgl community. From any area you have the choice to either explore around and search the members content in that area, or help build the community and create your own!

    tgl has many unique functions to enable members to increase trade within their local community using a combination of L and £. In the Shopping Village members can use the Shops, Services and Swap Shop areas to buy, sell and swap their goods and services.

    Community Reporters

    tgl is working with communities to introduce methods of media production and to host their interactive content. Local community members can film and edit their own sports, entertainment, news, documentaries, green screen productions and so on. They can produce multimedia C.V.s and infomercials to advertise their skills, goods, services, skills, projects and profile. It's a brand new type of advertising that is local, personal, informative, innovative and highly creative!

    Be Social in the Personal Quarter

    The Personal Quarter is the social network of tgl. Members build their own MYtgl profile and can sign-up their business or organisation as a full member with all the tgl systems, including an L Bank account.

    tglmail is a secure internal messaging system for members to communicate and interact with each other and the tgl administrators. You can communicate directly with any member of tgl and know that they have accepted the tgl charter. As part of tgl's trusted community we hope that members will feel comfortable communicating with one another and use tgl as a secure way to build initial relations to share ideas, links and inspiration.

    When people join tgl we ask them to read and accept our Charter. The Charter is basically a personal and binding pledge by each member to use the site honourably and honestly. This makes each member responsible for their actions and protects the site from foul play. All members accept that if they breech the Charter their profile and L Bank account will be suspended. This is designed to maintain standards and ethics within the tgl community.

    Alternative Systems in Banking

    The Banking district lies at the heart of tgl and is the home of the L Bank, which provides all the facilities of a High St. Bank on a debt-free basis. The L Bank has a range of functions to make and manage all L payments and requires a separate login is required for extra security.

    L is our own currency - L1 = £1. The L Bank has full management systems to view Statements, make payments, set up standing orders and set up a secure 4-digit pin number. Payments can be made online, by mobile phone and using in-store card readers.

    Why

    Alternative currencies are not new and have been set up all over the world, often in times of poor economy. There are systems that have been running for generations and new ones starting all the time.
    It is perfectly normal for alternatives to run alongside traditional monies. An extra layer of spending power enables people to shop locally while keeping traditional money circulating within the local economy.

    We offer a free license to anyone of like mind to collaborate with us to use and develop the software and systems. We hope that in the future, L will be one of many alternative currencies that work with tgl to enable a wider range of spending and possibilities.
